Cut fairly short after the tutorial stage but enough for basic impressions. Very Hoplite and that’s fine by me. I’m sure some variations will make themselves apparent but if you like the fundamentals of Hoplite then this will suit you. The art is a limited palette pixel style; I like it but that’s in the eye of the beholder and all that. Music is a gently unobtrusive electronic noodling in the background and sfx are sparse but cover the requirements. There’s one subscription and a one off upgrade to the Pro version. I need to further explore what the Pro offers to make that decision. Suffice to say I will have to absolutely love it to spend £13 on a permanent upgrade. The 3 month subscription is £5 which I may be tempted to as exploratory before thinking about the full upgrade. Both prices I would say are quite punchy. I’m happy to pay good money for substantial content. Whether that is what’s on offer here remains to be seen. elcrazy Well-Known Member Sep 19, 2017 513 367 63 #5 elcrazy, Nov 25, 2023 So I just played this a little bit and it’s pretty great. Asking price is quite high for an iOS game. In Canada it’s $17.99 plus tax. Will come to just over $20. That’s being said, it may be worth it. Just because it feels high in this market doesn’t mean it’s actually high. Yes Hoplite was like $3. But wouldn’t you have all paid $20 if you knew how epic it ended up being? It’s still on my phone, I know that. This is Hoplite 2.0 with nice roguelite. Looks like there is a lot added for the asking price. I certainly will not “rent” it for 3 months. Would rather just buy it. Gonna play free version a bit more. But I’m close to hitting the buy button. I recently went back to Hoplite and wanted “more”. This seems to be that “more”. I certainly look forward to diving and see what else the game has to offer. If you enjoyed Hoplite, you need to at least give this a try. There is still a lot here for free. And no adds or timers or anything like that. Just try it out and buy with a lot more added. Lol note: They do tease you a bit. I have unlocked two things I can’t use unless I buy full version. Plus all the pilots you can see you can’t use. Lull4by likes this. Given that there are several thousand levels, and a single price point, I'll keep plugging along on Hoplite for now. It's like playing Virtual Boy lol. Would kill for some color theme options. Otherwise this game is absolutely fantastic. I'm not too sure what the unlock vs. subscription is all about, but from the portion I've been able to play without feeling like vomiting I'd easily drop whatever they're asking for a one time full unlock. elcrazy likes this. elcrazy Well-Known Member Sep 19, 2017 513 367 63 #8 elcrazy, Nov 26, 2023 Last edited: Nov 26, 2023 Looks like there are lots of pallets choices. This scheme looks to be easier on the eyes… Ok last edit…. When you change palette color you get the option to change the app icon to match as well. I believe both in apps are the same. One is just basically renting the full game for 3 months. The other is just the full premium price to own the game. I’m still having a ton of fun with the free part. But thinking I’m gonna have to drop the $20 for full premium. Just too much I am missing out on lol. Seems like a bit of an odd comment. This has a premium price as well. Game seems to have as much if not more than Hoplite does. It’s a free game with increidble Hoplite vibes. If you love Hoplite that much why not try something else that’s done incredibly well for free? Not trying to be rude. Just think if you love Hoplite you gotta try this. I love it but wow it’s hard. I probably just need to slow down a lot. Patience is the key here lol. Have you figured out how to hack the building? I have a lot unlocked. Just unlocked fire which is pretty powerful. Did you buy the full game? I think there are 5 more campaigns. I did buy it. But can’t “save the city” just yet lol. elcrazy Well-Known Member Sep 19, 2017 513 367 63 #13 elcrazy, Nov 27, 2023 Ya it’s under progress. I looked under options as well. But I get why it’s where it is. So happy I was able to help. Enjoy! I’m loving it. But as mentioned above still trying to beat the first campaign. Roxton Well-Known Member Patreon Bronze Jan 30, 2015 130 58 28 #14 Roxton, Nov 27, 2023 On the daily district, I was given techs that I had not yet unlocked. One of them was “Hack,” so I suspect when we unlock that one, we’ll be able to get into the building trivially. I have bought the game. My winning run involved excessive use of two diversely upgraded dash abilities. The first dash allowed targeting a vactic, giving it a lot of freedom. Add in a couple combo cooldown upgrades, and you kill things fast while staying really healthy. You might consider enabling “purist” if you want to try that approach with some determinism. i’ve since had luck with grenades, although that one requires a bit more thinking. I was not displeased to learn that Saving the City is not the win condition. It unlocks a new objective, and with it, more enemy types. And I haven’t even unlocked all enemies. Between the copilots, their companion quests, and the diverse tech arsenal, I expect this title will keep me engaged for a quite a while! ste86uk Well-Known Member May 9, 2012 6,399 810 113 #15 ste86uk, Nov 27, 2023 I didn’t take much note of this as I don’t love the aesthetic and there’s that many games on iOS sometimes I pass games over for minor niggles because there’s so much choice I have to make a decision quickly to pass or play. But all of these comments, I can’t ignore that so I’m going to have to download it and check it out for myself. The price does sound high for iOS but I’ve been use to buying switch games for a while so it doesn’t seem so bad, but I’d have to really love it to commit that much still. But glad I can try it beforehand. The price point for an abstract board game (a genre I really enjoy) seems too high. By point of comparison, I bought Divinity 2 for the same price, albeit it was on sale. 2. I had a hard time differentiating what each enemy does given the uniform color scheme. Hoplite’s enemies are more easily identifiable and one can determine their weapons and range when strategizing in advance. 3. The intro is too wordy. I’m the type who skips intros and jumps right into the fray. This resulted in its deletion. However, after redownloading the game, given your recommendation, I find the game to be very well thought out and entertaining. My current niggle is when positioning yourself in the first drop/move, I prefer a confirmation of one’s location. There’ve been more than one occasion when I’m trying to identify what an enemy does (see #2) and fat finger the adjacent spot only to get inadvertently tagged. As a result, I’m at a demerit after the initial placement; which as you know, can be a difficult spot to be in because the only way to replenish health, is through combos. I’m still not sold on spending $13 for this game. I’m willing to pay half the price to support the work. But, since Hoplite has been my top of the line abstract board game with it’s more approachable price point; and, literally thousands of levels, I find it difficult to justify that price tag, ATM. Either way, I’m glad you gave me some food for thought that challenged my thinking, giving me a chance to try this game out. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
