Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat (), the mobile entry in the superb Devil May Cry series from Nebula Joy and Capcom, has always looked great, but it finally feels like a modern Devil May Cry game thanks to its new theme song. The Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat theme song “Fire Inside" has been composed and producer by Casey Edwards (Devil Trigger, Bury the Light), features vocals by Victor Borba (Bury the Light), drums by Anup Sastry (Bury the Light, Exohuman), and mixed by Zakk Cervini at MDDN Studios. If you’ve not played Devil May Cry 5 or Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, you absolutely should. Devil May Cry 5 is one of the best action games ever, and the best in the series. I’m glad that they all got back to do a song for Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat. “Fire Inside" is superb. Watch the video for it below:

The song is so good, it got me to re-download Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition on PS5 for a replay, and also the base game on Steam Deck to play on the go once again. Since you’re here, you may as well also listen to Bury the Light from Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition below:

Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat releases on January 10th, 2024 for iOS and Android. If you’d like to play it with a controller, watch the Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat video showcasing controller support here. You can pre-register for Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat on the official website here and pre-order it on the App Store for iOS here. Pre-registering will get you different rewards like gems, red orbs, potions, and more as detailed on the official website. Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat’s App Store page has a list of some of the different in app purchases like seasonal cards, gift packs, and different sets of devil gems included in the game. What do you think of today’s Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat theme song and are you motivated?

Niantic and Capcom just revealed the Monster Hunter Now (Free) January 2024 events for the game on iOS and Android. In addition to Qualily’s Special Quests (Carpenterbugs, Monster Bons+, Zenny, and more) returning, this month will see Azure Rathalos descend into Monster Hunter Now as a part of the “Descent of the Azure King" quest. I’m glad Azure Rathalos will have a boosted appearance rate throughout the event in forest habitats and not only during specific times of the day. For some reason, we are getting an event focused on Banbaro and Radobaan with increased boost rates as well. I’ve not run into anyone using gear from either of them. I’m looking forward to Qualily’s quests for Monster Bone+ specifically from the 12th until the 18th of this month. The Azure Rathalos event is on from the 15th until the 21st of this month. The official website event section for this month is here.

So far, the recent updates have been good, but I’m still not sold on Hunt-a-thons. They need to balance them for solo play for those living in parts of the world without many Monster Hunter Now players. If you are planning to start playing the game, I put together some (newly updated) tips and tricks for the game, details on the weapons, special skills, the current monsters list, my wishlist for future update monsters, and more. You can grab Monster Hunter Now on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The in app purchases include different sets of gems and upgrades. Check out the official website here. What do you think of Monster Hunter Now if you’ve been playing it and did you try a Hunt-a-thon yet?

Square Enix just announced that tactical RPG Dragon Quest Tact (Free) for iOS and Android will be shutting down in February 2024, about two years after launching in the West. Dragon Quest Tact released in Japan a while ago, and it hit the West in early 2021 following Dragon Quest Tact pre-registrations going live. The free to play tactical RPG based on the Dragon Quest series for mobile platforms has just had in app purchases disabled and Passport renewals stopped alongside today’s announcement of the service ending.

Square Enix will have events going on until the servers are shut down on February 29th though. The reason for the game shutting down is apparently because the team couldn’t maintain the experience going forward after delivering for two years. Dragon Quest Tact is free to play and if you’d like to try it before it shuts down, you can download Dragon Quest Tact on the App Store for iOS here and pre-register for it on Google Play for Android here. Check out the official English website here. Did you play Dragon Quest Tact since launch, and did you enjoy it?

Ahead of its launch on Wednesday morning HoYoverse has released a new trailer for the upcoming Honkai Star Rail version 1.6 update showcasing Ruan Mei. Ruan Mei feels like the first character since Kafka that everyone I know who plays Honkai Star Rail is excited for. If you’ve not kept up with the update, all players will be able to recruit Dr Ratio for free with the update bringing in a brand-new area, the Herta Space Station’s Seclusion Zone, alongside a Critter Pick Scavenging event, a new event within the Simulated Universe, and more. Pre-installation went live yesterday as well. The Honkai Star Rail 1.6 update download size is about 8.2GB. Watch the new Honkai Star Rail version 1.6 Ruan Mei character trailer below:

Super Mario Run (Free) recently celebrated the launch of the brilliant Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch game with a free unlock campaign on iOS and Android that ended last month. Today, Nintendo has announced (thanks to MondoMega on Twitter for the tip) a new celebration event for Super Mario Run from now until March 15th, 2024 bringing in the Wonder Flowers from Super Mario Bros. Wonder into Toad Rally. This event has been added with today’s 3.1.0 update, and it will have a meter filling up as you perform certain actions in Toad Rally. Once the meter fills up completely, the Wonder Flower appears and it transforms coins into Golden Goombas. You can use these to unlock stamps and get special buildings in the Kingdom Builder mode. Check out the Wonder Flowers in Super Mario Run Toad Rally in the gameplay video below:

If you haven’t played Super Mario Run in a while, now is a good time to try it on iOS and Android with this new event ongoing. The in app purchase full game unlock is the only purchase available for the game on iOS and Android. Grab the game for free here on the App Store for iOS and here on Google Play for Android. If you’d prefer playing a premium experience over Super Mario Run, you owe it to yourself to play the superlative Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Read my review of it here. ‘Ghost Trick’ on iOS From Capcom Will Be Delisted on March 25th, the HD Remastered Version With No Save or Purchases Carrying Over Will Be Released https://toucharcade.com/2023/12/20/ghost-trick-ios-version-delisting-2024-hd-remaster-release-date-capcom/ https://toucharcade.com/2023/12/20/ghost-trick-ios-version-delisting-2024-hd-remaster-release-date-capcom/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2023 06:42:51 +0000 https://toucharcade.com/?p=316316 Continue reading "‘Ghost Trick’ on iOS From Capcom Will Be Delisted on March 25th, the HD Remastered Version With No Save or Purchases Carrying Over Will Be Released"

Surprising almost no one, Capcom has announced that it will be delisting Ghost Trick (Free) on iOS on March 25th, 2024. Purchasing the game or in-app content will no longer be supported after that date. If you already own it or grab it before then, you should be able to play it and unlock achievements or re-download. One thing to note is compatibility with future versions of iOS isn’t guaranteed. Ghost Trick in particular out of Capcom’s mobile releases has been delisted on iOS many times to be updated for new versions of iOS and fixed. This version debuted back in 2010 so it will have had 14 years of support (not counting when it was delisted multiple times before of course), so a new HD version arriving is a good thing assuming this one will be supported.

After how the publisher brought the new version of the Ace Attorney Trilogy to mobile replacing the original game, I knew this would happen to Ghost Trick as well, and fully expect the remaining Ace Attorney games to follow this pattern in 2025. If you’ve not kept up with the news, Ghost Trick hit Switch, Steam, and other consoles earlier this year as a full remaster and it is fantastic. Read Shaun’s review here. I like this version a lot more than the current iOS version, but it is still disappointing that there’s no upgrade path or save transfer offered. Watch the trailer for the new version of the game coming to iOS in the future below:

With Ghost Trick confirmed to come back to iOS after it is delisted in March 2024, I hope Capcom can bring The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles to iOS and also I have not forgotten about Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. While Capcom has recently been great on iOS with the premium ports of Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village, hopefully the publisher remembers to bring some of its other IP to mobile as well through ports or resurrecting older games. A price point for the new HD version hasn’t been announced yet, but it is priced at $29.99 on console and PC right now. I expect the iOS price point of the new release to be about $20. Did you play Ghost Trick on iOS, Nintendo DS, or any of its modern platform versions?

Both Vampire Survivors (Free) from poncle and PowerWash Simulator (not on mobile yet) from FuturLab are games that delivered an immense amount of value, and kept going with free and paid content. While the former has had two superlative DLC packs, the latter has started faltering recently as we saw with the Back to the Future pack. When poncle announced the Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC, the first collaboration DLC, I was a bit concerned. Vampire Survivors continues to feel too good to be true with value and fun, so I keep thinking it might falter somehow. Would the first collaboration be that? Thankfully not. This review will cover the iOS, Steam Deck, and Xbox Series X versions.

On paper, the Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC was already worth it at just $2.49 even if it only added the one big map. The fact that it brings in 9 new characters, 15 new weapons, new music, and even and Adventure is just icing on the sus cake. As someone who hasn’t played much of Among Us, I was curious how I’d find this DLC. It turns out, it is still superb, and I feel like the possibilities here are even crazier than before just in the Adventure, let alone main modes.

In many cases, developers release DLC and expect you to only access it after playing a significant amount of the base game. With the Vampire Survivors DLC, you get access to the new maps directly thankfully, so if you’ve not played a lot of the main game, you can still access the new stage, Polus Replica. This is where you begin with whatever character you’ve unlocked from the base game, and work your way to unlocking the new content.

Developer poncle has made things better with it being very easy to see what you need to do to unlock new content. You no longer need to constantly keep a tab open on your browser for some guide. The new stage features new enemies, bosses, and a plethora of possibilities as you mix and match new and old items. Things get a bit too crazy, and I wish Valve had fixed the Steam Deck capture so I could show you how much the frame rate can drop after a complex run towards the end. Either way, I love how fun things are with the characters and weapons in the Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC.

Out of the new weapons and characters, Imposter Rina is definitely my favorite followed by the Scientist Mina. The Science Rocks and Vent are the funniest new items for sure, but the evolutions in this DLC really elevate it to a whole other level. I definitely recommend experiencing it through the Adventure when you can, because the team did a fantastic job with that.

Visually, Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC almost seamlessly transitions Among Us content and animations into its aesthetic. It just works and makes complete sense when you play the DLC level and start unlocking characters. While I haven’t played much of Among Us, the new music in Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC is really great. This soundtrack continues to be the gift that keeps on giving just like the game. It is complemented by the lovely new sounds for the weapons and items included in the DLC.

If you’re new to Vampire Survivors and haven’t gotten the prior DLC yet or played it in co-op, read my co-op impressions of the Steam version here, my Nintendo Switch review here, Steam Deck review of Vampire Survivors 1.0 here, Legacy of the Moonspell DLC review here, iOS review here, and Tides of the Foscari DLC review here. I’m a big fan, and I’m glad to see poncle continue the high quality free updates and DLC with 1.8 and the paid Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting collaboration DLC.

Even if you don’t care or know about Among Us, the Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC is an essential purchase. It is just wild and crazy in the funniest possible ways while delivering so much through the characters, weapons, stage, and adventure included. I can’t wait to see what poncle does next for collaboration DLC, and Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting is something I’m going to play a ton over the coming weeks as I try and unlock everything on all platforms. If you’ve not played Vampire Survivors in a while, grab this DLC (and prior DLC) and get back. Vampire Survivors deserves it. Hats off to poncle for this one. Both figuratively and in-game.

Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC review score: 5/5

After releasing Resident Evil Village on iPhone 15 Pro and supported iPad models a few months ago, Capcom has released the superlative Resident Evil 4 Remake (Free) on not only iOS and iPadOS, but also macOS as a universal release for Apple platforms. Thanks to early access from Capcom, I’ve been playing Resident Evil 4 Remake on my iPhone 15 Pro and MacBook Air (M1) over the last few days. While I need a bit more time for the full review, this Resident Evil 4 Remake iPhone 15 Pro review in progress will cover my early thoughts on the mobile conversion. I’ll be updating this later in the week once I’ve played the public build and also tested out more.

Having already covered Resident Evil 4 Remake on Steam Deck and its DLC, I will not waste too much time discussing the game itself. After Capcom’s superb Resident Evil 2 Remake, many were disappointed in Resident Evil 3 Remake. Having never played the originals, I loved both of them, and my only complaint with Resident Evil 3 Remake is that it shouldn’t have been a full priced game. Resident Evil 4 is a legendary game that changed the industry, so remaking it was risky for Capcom. Thankfully, the developer and publisher pulled it off in spades delivering the best version of Resident Evil 4 by far. Resident Evil 4 Remake debuted on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and PC. It has not been ported to anything else yet, but is now on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later), and macOS (M1 and later) as a universal release. While I expected this port to be similar to Resident Evil Village on iPhone 15 Pro, it is different in quite a few ways, and I’m not sure if the final build releasing this week will be the same.

On first launching Resident Evil 4 Remake, you’re prompted to download about 12GB of data. If you don’t download this, the game closes. After this required download, you can sample the opening of the game for free. If you do end up buying the one time unlock for the full game or any DLC, there’s an additional download required. The final install size with everything downloaded and updated is about 31.3GB on iPhone 15 Pro. For comparison, the macOS version on my MacBook Air is about 65GB, the Steam Deck version is 69GB, and the PS5 version is about 78GB with all DLC installed. The screenshot below is with the DLC filter enabled.

On the graphics side, Resident Evil 4 Remake on iOS in the build I have, does not let you adjust anything of note barring HDR. I tried every menu both in and outside a loaded save file, and could not find any graphics options on iPhone 15 Pro like there were in Resident Evil Village. I’m not sure if this is Capcom tuning it for the device directly, or this build not having them yet. This is why I wanted to wait for the App Store build to play before putting a score on this review. On the PC version, there’s a tab in between Display and Language to adjust graphics. This is absent on iPhone 15 Pro in the build I have. I was curious to see if setting things low and trying out different upscaling would let me try out different frame rate targets, but it seems like you can’t right now. Performance isn’t perfect right now, but it looks very good on the phone’s screen with HDR enabled. I’ll be testing more of it and comparing it with the MacBook Air M1 version for the full review in the coming days. Right now, it is capped at 30fps on iPhone 15 Pro, and the frame rate is sadly not a perfect 30fps.

When it comes to the controls, the same issues as with Resident Evil Village apply here. I noticed Resident Evil 4 Remake defaults to showing PlayStation button prompts with the touchscreen controls and when an external controller is used. This is like the PC version. You can change it to display Xbox button prompts in the settings. One disappointing aspect is Capcom didn’t work on adding a similar haptic feedback or responsive vibrations like in the PS5 version on the iPhone 15 Pro version when using the DualSense controller. There is vibration, but it falls short of how awesome the experience is on PS5.

A lot has been said online for Resident Evil 4 Remake costing “$60" on mobile. The horror. I’m going to give some context to the pros and cons of this price. Capcom so far, has not been great at maintaining its older premium games on mobile. Some games have been broken until years later when they get fixed. While it is likely these new Resident Evil ports will be supported for a bit at least given Apple’s heavy advertising, I will not forgive Capcom for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on iOS going away. So far, I can see hesitation in supporting these releases. Back to the actual price of the full game unlock and DLC, Capcom is matching the current console and PC including discounts by offering a launch price for mobile bringing it down to $29.99 for a limited time. Over the years, we’ve seen some games hit premium prices or match other platforms, and I’m confident in saying Resident Evil 4 Remake is easily worth the asking price given its port compared to something like Civilization VI.

Since Resident Evil 4 Remake is a universal purchase supporting iPadOS, iOS, and macOS, it includes the ability to upload and download your data from iCloud Drive in the server tab of the menu. This didn’t seem to be a seamless sync like we have in Apple Arcade games. Also, while I could upload without issues from iPhone 15 Pro, macOS uploading never worked regardless of the three networks I tried.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is a game you will likely replay. These remakes are great to replay, and it is one of the big reasons I try to keep both Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake installed on my consoles. I just wish Capcom put in more effort into the touchscreen controls. A good recent example is Hitman: Blood Money which has an amazing conversion on mobile. Not only does it support controllers as you’d expect, but it also has superb touch controls and keyboard & mouse support. Resident Evil 4 Remake’s touch implementation leaves a lot to be desired.

In its current state, Resident Evil 4 Remake is an easy recommendation if you have a controller despite the visual cutbacks. The Backbone One or a DualSense controller for iPad and macOS are basically essential. Think of this like those Steam releases that have “controller required". Those don’t let you use keyboard and mouse, the default input options on PC, but force you to use a controller. Resident Evil 4 Remake on iOS does not force a controller with touchscreen controls available, but I would not recommend them right now. Capcom has done a fantastic job so far in bringing this masterpiece, and definitive version of Resident Evil 4, to Apple devices. I hope we see more RE Engine games arrive in the future, including Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake.

Just like Resident Evil Village, I recommend downloading Resident Evil 4 Remake for free if you have a supported device to see how you find it. I love Resident Evil 4 Remake, and it has been amazing re-experiencing it on iPhone 15 Pro. Capcom is also continuing the tradition of bringing Resident Evil 4 Remake, like the original game, to loads of platforms. Having already played Resident Evil 4 Remake on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Steam Deck, I’m very impressed with a lot of what I’ve played of the game and Separate Ways on iPhone 15 Pro, but hope Capcom improves it with updates.

Niantic and Capcom just revealed a new event in Monster Hunter Now (Free) on iOS and Android to bring in 2024. If you’ve not played the game in a while, they recently added Hunt-a-thons which are raid-like experiences balanced for multiplayer, but playable solo. This was around the time Radobaan, Banbaro, Barioth, and Zinogre were added to the game in the first major title update. The Monster Hunter Now Happy Hunting New Year event sees a boosted appearance rate for Zinogre hunt-a-thons and the return of Pink Rathian and Black Diablos. Pink Rathian will be coming back from December 23rd at 9 AM until December 31st at midnight while Black Diablos will be returning from January 1st 2024 at 00:00 until January 8th 2024 at midnight.

Zinogre’s hunt-a-thons will see boosted appearances throughout. The highlight of the event for me is more monsters appearing in shorter intervals between 1 PM and 6 PM from December 23rd until January 8th. There will also be some new in-game bundles available to buy. Details are here.

The TGA 2023 trailer had new characters, combat, bosses, and more showcased in addition to Hollow Zero, the final boss. I’m still wondering why we haven’t had the console platforms announced for the game. Either way, watch the new TGA 2023 trailer for the game below:

Watch the Honkai Star Rail TGA 2023 trailer below:

Honkai Star Rail also won The Game Award for best mobile game. I’m not too shocked at that since it is awesome and won Apple’s iPhone Game of the Year as well. With a 2024 release date confirmed, Zenless Zone Zero is set for iOS, Android, and PC with it also set to launch on unannounced consoles. Check out more about the game on the official website here. I’ve been enjoying the second closed beta on iPhone 15 Pro quite a bit. What do you think of it if you’ve been playing it and also did you end up watching The Game Awards?

The major Vampire Survivors version 1.8 update with Adventures went live earlier today on Steam and Xbox platforms, but will be out on mobile and Switch soon. This big free update brings in the Adventure Mode. Adventures are self-contained stories that remix content from the base game. This mode while free, isn’t available from the start. This Vampire Survivors Adventures guide will cover the adventures available right now, how to unlock the mode, and more. Poncle says the aim of this mode is to give you an excuse to replay Vampire Survivors when you’ve unlocked everything. I haven’t unlocked everything, but have gotten very close. Watch the Vampire Survivors Adventures trailer below:

How to unlock adventures in Vampire Survivors

To unlock adventures, you need to collect the Atlas Gate relic in Boss Rash at minute 7. To do this, pick a powerful character you’re comfortable with like Queen Sigma or Red Death, and survive until the seventh minute. Collect the relic from the middle of the arena. You can now either survive or quit the stage. This unlocks adventures or Adventure Mode in Vampire Survivors.

How to unlock Boss Rash mode in Vampire Survivors

If you’ve not unlocked Boss Rash yet, it is the third challenge stage. You can do this by unlocking hyper mode for all the normal stages, or using the cheat code: ‘peakgamedesign’ without quotes in the Forbidden Scrolls menu.

What adventures are available in Vampire Survivors

Right now, there are three adventures available: A Garlic Paradise, World of Light and Dark, and Legacy of the Moonspell. The first two are for all players, but the third one requires owning the DLC of the same name.

Vampire Survivors Adventure Mode achievements

Right now, there are no platform-specific achievements for adventures, but you can unlock base game achievements from within adventures and adventure mode.

Vampire Survivors Atlas Gate

Right now, there’s no achievement for the Atlas Gate, but a future patch will add some achievements including the Atlas Gate one.

When will Vampire Survivors get new adventures?

On the official FAQ page, poncle confirmed that the team is planning on new adventures alongside future free updates and paid DLCs.

If you’ve not played the game in a while, read my co-op impressions of the Steam version here and my Nintendo Switch review here. You can also read my Steam Deck review of Vampire Survivors here, Legacy of the Moonspell DLC review here, iOS review here, and Tides of the Foscari DLC review here. Niantic and Capcom just released the first major update for Monster Hunter Now (Free) on iOS and Android with the Fulminations in the Frost title update out now. This update brings in the two weapon types: Lance and Dual Blades, new monsters: Radobaan, Banbaro, Barioth, and Zinogre, and much more. Urgent Quests will be present as a part of a new Special Quest for the new monsters. After that Zinogre will only be included in Hunt-a-thons, which launch beginning December 15th. The update brings in the sleep element as well from Radobaan, new balance adjustments for other weapons and monsters, and a lot more. The biomes now have a snowy aesthetic and new music to celebrate the holiday winter season. There will also be new small monsters. Watch the Monster Hunter Now Fulminations of the Frost Zinogre update launch trailer below:

With this update, Hunt-a-thons have also been added. The first one begins on Decembr 15th until December 17th letting you hunt five monsters in succession. The large monsters here are stronger than usual so Niantic recommends hunting with others. I’m not sure if this will be balanced for solo play or not though. A new medal will be available here alongside exclusive quests. The first one recommends ice-element weapons to hunt Zinogre. You need to be HR 11 or higher for Hunt-a-thons. You will need to buy a Hunt-a-thon Ticket instead of waiting after you complete one Hunt-a-thon. The tickets cost 150 gems, but you can wait for 180 minutes for the next one according to Niantic.

What do you think of Monster Hunter Now if you’ve been playing it so far on iOS and Android?

Day of the Devs The Game Awards 2023 Edition just aired, and there were a plethora of announcements of great indie games and updates. I’ll have a round-up of the ones I liked the most in the SwitchArcade, but poncle just announced the first collaboration DLC for Vampire Survivors (Free) today with the Emergency Meeting DLC coming December 18th for Xbox and PC. This DLC will come to mobile and Switch soon after. The DLC arrives soon after today’s major Adventures update on PC and Xbox. Hopefully today’s 1.8.0 update also hits mobile and Switch soon. This new paid DLC brings 9 new characters, 15 new weapons, a new stage, and of course new music as well. I’m definitely going to be reviewing this DLC and playing it on every platform as usual. Watch the Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC announcement trailer below:

The Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC is priced at $2.49 and will be launching on December 18th for Xbox and PC with mobile and Switch to follow. Wishlist it on Steam here. What an unusual day we have arrived upon today. Now, Sonic the Hedgehog games aren’t a new thing for iOS gaming. The original Sonic the Hedgehog appeared on the classic iPod, so the Blue Blur got in the doors as fast as you would expect him to. The iPhone and iPad saw their own ports of some of the classic games, too. We’ve also seen a handful of original Sonic games for the platform, like Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Sonic Dash, Sonic Jump, and Sonic Runners. But Sonic Dream Team hits a bit differently. It’s not just an original Sonic game, but it’s an exclusive one. And it’s not some free-to-play nonsense, but rather a proper (albeit bite-sized in some ways) 3D Sonic the Hedgehog title. That, of course, lands us in a different kind of Russian Roulette. Is this a good outing for SEGA’s mascot, or has he tripped over his non-existent laces yet again?

Using questions to end an introductory paragraph is an old habit from my first gig back in the day. It doesn’t make much sense when you can see the score immediately. Well, you know already. If you want a decent 3D Sonic game on your iPhone or iPad, I’m happy to say that this delivers. It leans more into the Boost Sonic style rather than the Adventure style, but I’m sure most would have expected that anyway. There’s a time and a place for that eventual Adventure 3, but I don’t think it’s here and now. There’s a story here, some business about Eggman trying to pervert some mysterious power to use for his ambitions of world conquest, but nothing to get too excited about. You’ll get a lot of cut-scenes, but most of them are just basic stills with text boxes. Also, I can’t believe we have a whole Sonic game set in the world of dreams and NiGHTS isn’t anywhere about. Rude.

Anyhow, the broad structure is familiar. You’ve got four zones that are broken up into three acts, each of which is basically a level incorporating the same theme as the rest of the acts in that zone. In Sonic Dream Team, each of those acts is then broken down into a bunch of challenges, each of which will net you a Dream Orb. The first challenge in each act also has a number of collectibles and other things around for you to hunt for, which will in turn net you more Dream Orbs and other goodies. Dream Orbs are the key to opening up further acts and zones and progressing the story. And of course at the end of each zone, you’ll have a lovely little boss battle. Quick napkin math will tell you that we’ve got twelve acts in total, which seems like a fair amount but ends up feeling too few after you’ve blasted your way through.

Adding some replay value are the additional characters, split in the usual Sonic manner by their abilities. Sonic and Amy go fast, so fast they can zip along trails of rings in the sky. They’re also the default characters. Tails and Cream can fly, as they often do. Then we have Knuckles and Rouge, and they can climb up walls, as they often do. There are some paths that only particular characters can reach, and you might have some fun fully exploring each act to see what you can find. They’re not massive spaces, but there are some interesting things to see if you poke around enough. Some extra weekly Tails’ Challenges give you more reasons to return, though it starts to feel like wringing blood from a stone at a certain point with the small number of acts.

I actually like the level designs a lot. The spaces are clearly built to keep pushing you forward in fun ways, with little breather sections between the breakneck rails and tubes that let you slow down and explore a little. Each zone also offers up some distinct gameplay mechanics, and the difficulty from act to act ramps up nicely as the game gets you comfortable with those mechanics. There are some of the usual 3D Sonic issues, of course. Sometimes you just go flying off of sections to your (only slightly inconvenient) “death". Sometimes the path forward isn’t as clear as it could be. You don’t often need to adjust the camera, but on such occasions it can be a real pig.

This seems like as good a time as any to talk controls. If you have a controller, I recommend you use it. One of those nice Backbone controllers or a Kishi would be a lovely choice. If you do that, you’ll be playing it as you would expect, with movement on the left stick, camera control on the right, a button for jumping, and a button for dashing and boosting. Simple and easy to play. If you’re using touch controls, you’re given some virtual buttons and a virtual stick to mimic those actions. You can just drag the camera around, which is actually better than having on a stick, but trying to keep an eye on those buttons when you’re rolling around at the speed of sound can be bothersome. Still, I won’t say it plays badly with touch controls. It’s fine.

In terms of the presentation, it’s really well-done. The visuals are at a glance as good as the console 3D Sonic games, though the zones themselves are obviously a fair bit less ambitious in scope than most of them. The soundtrack is good, though I don’t think the best tunes in the franchise have much to fear from it. Ah, most of you will be playing with the mute switch on anyway. But if you do leave the sound on, I don’t think you’ll be displeased with what you hear. This game feels like a full-effort affair in virtually all regards, and that’s something I always like to see in a mobile game.

Really, the main way Sonic Dream Team drops the ball, apart from the frankly appalling lack of NiGHTS, is in just how breezy the game is. It only takes a few minutes to blow through one run of each act, and you can pretty much clean the plate on the whole affair in one evening. Nothing in the game is all that difficult, and I’d argue the bosses are almost laughably easy. It’s fine for a game to be short, of course. I like a lot of short games. But it feels like Sonic Dream Team is just starting to cook when it ends. There’s more to say here, I’m sure of it. Maybe the number of zones will be expanded in the promised future updates? It comes off like a warm-up for the real game, but the warm-up is all you get.

Sonic Dream Team gets a lot of things right, and I think anyone with an Apple Arcade subscription will have a really good time running through its various nooks and crannies. Even those who aren’t subscribed might want to pick up a month just to play through the game. The 3D Sonic pantheon definitely has far worse efforts than this. But that’s part of what makes it frustrating. It overcame a lot of the challenges 3D Sonic often struggles to get over, only to retire before the race is finished with a relatively short run-time. This could have been an amazing chapter in Sonic history, but instead it has to settle for being a good one.

I missed this late last week, but HoYoverse released another playable character trailer for the upcoming urban fantasy action RPG Zenless Zone Zero. We’ve had a few trailers so far for playable characters, but the newest one focuses on Nicole Demara from the Cunning Hares. Nicole has been the focus of most of the promotional artwork for the game, and I’ve enjoyed the Cunning Hares so far in the closed beta which I’ve been playing on iPhone 15 Pro. It looks stunning, and I can’t wait to see how the full game ends up being. If you’ve not kept up with Zenless Zone Zero, it has you taking on the role of a Proxy trying to uncover the mysteries of New Eridu. Watch the Zenless Zone Zero Nicole Demara character trailer below:

As of now, the game is confirmed for iOS, Android, and PC with it also set to launch on unannounced consoles. A release date or window is not available as of this writing. Check out more about the game on the official website here. I’m interested to see how Zenless Zone Zero is showcased next, and whether we get a new trailer for it at The Game Awards 2023 later this week. What do you think of Zenless Zone Zero so far, and do you play Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail from HoYoverse regularly?

Square Enix just announced that Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia (Free) will be shutting down at the end of February 2024. If you never played it, Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia released on iOS and Android devices in English back in January 2018 following its debut about a year prior in Japan. Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia is a social RPG from Square Enix with multiplayer modes and turn based combat. Read our review of the game from its launch here. Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia will now be shutting down about six years after its global release. Check out the Tweet below for the schedule leading into service shutting down:

I still remember Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia launched around the time we had Dissidia Final Fantasy NT arrive on PS4, a game I feel like only I enjoyed by the end of things. If you’d like to grab Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia while it is still up, you can grab it on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. Check out our forum thread for it here. Did you play Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia before and what would you like to see from Square Enix in a future entry?

Is that the full title then? Gubbins – It’s A Word Game (Free)? I’m just going to call it Gubbins from here on out. If I need to talk about normal gubbins, I’ll write it without the capital letter G like I just did there. But I don’t have an old brown sofa, so the odds of me needing to talk about gubbins in the course of any given review are fairly low. The odds of me needing to talk about the Gubbins in Gubbins, at least for this review, are rather high. Sorry, I’ve reviewed a lot of word games on iOS in my time, and these intro paragraphs don’t get any easier the fiftieth time. Should we move to the actual meat of the review?

Anyway, Gubbins. It’s a word game, that’s no lie. Letters are distributed to you in some manner or another, and you need to flex your vocabulary skills to try to make big, fancy words in exchange for big, fancy points. This was one of the more obvious kinds of games to put on mobile phones, so it’s not surprising word games came in early and strong. There are absolutely tons of these available, and a lot of them are very good. So how can a new entry stand out from the pack? The answer, I think, comes down to two things. You have to have a twist or gimmick that actually works, and you have to bring your A-game to the presentation. Anything less and people are just going to keep playing Spell Tower or what have you.

I’m going to do the less obvious thing and touch on the gameplay features first. You’ve got three modes to play, though if you opt to go free-to-play you can only choose one to play per day. The mechanics are similar between the three, with only a few different points. Classic mode is the normal game, and I’ll explain what that means soon. Pencil mode removes all but one of the Gubbins from the game, turning it a relatively pure word game. Daily mode gives you the same set-up as every other player on that day, with particular words laid out and certain rules in effect. There’s a reasonably-priced IAP if you want to unlock everything, by the way. I recommend doing it if you like the game. Studio Folly seem like decent folks, and the game is good.

Okay, you’ve selected your desired mode. You’ll now have a board in front of you with a little tray of letters, and you’d be forgiven for thinking there’s something awfully familiar about all of this. But some of the letters are stuck together with other letters, and there are letter tiles behind the letters. It’s like some sort of bizarre solitaire game! If you want to see what’s on those tiles, you’ll have to play the ones on top first. That’s just how it is. You can place them anywhere on the board, and you don’t have to worry about them crashing into other letters or anything. You can rotate them between vertical and horizontal alignments, which is nice.

Once you’ve made something resembling a proper word on the board, you just run your finger along to submit it. The tiles will will be cleared, you’ll get your points, and everyone goes home happy. Keep on playing those tiles until you reach the one at the bottom that says FIN, and when you’re satisfied that you’ve done all you can, play that tile to finish the game. It’s like every game is a fancy little French film. Classy as heck. Your score will be displayed along with all the nifty words you made, and you might even unlock some achievements. If you’re the sort that shares your score, this is where you can do it.

The tile stack is an important feature of this game. It’s not unusual for a game like this to keep which letters are coming next a surprise, but you can clearly see which tiles are blocking the next batch and are nudged towards using letters you might otherwise leave behind. It’s a good set-up that gets players to use new strategies. But it lacks that sizzle, doesn’t it? We’ve got tile stacks! No one is throwing down their wallets for that one. We need some extra gubbins in here. We need some… Gubbins.

In Gubbins, Gubbins are special tiles that will show up randomly as you’re playing through your stack. Some of them will help you, and some of them will hurt you. At first there will only be a few kinds of Gubbins, but as you play you’ll unlock more of them. One of the IAPs also adds more Gubbins to the game. Each Gubbin has its own specific effect, and you’ll generally be given a choice between two of them when they first appear in a game. Some will let you move letters around. Some will move letters around on their own. Some will add useful tiles to the board. Others will add largely unwanted junk tiles.

Bad Gubbins will play themselves once revealed, while it’s up to you to play the good Gubbins whenever you think it’s best to do so. It’s an interesting random element that gives the game a lot of its mechanical flavor, and it’s why I tend to prefer Classic mode to Pencil mode. You might feel differently of course, so it’s good we have the choice. The thing about the Gubbins though is that they also give the game a lot of its aesthetic flavor, and that’s how we move into talking about the presentation. That’s the kind of smooth transition you get from a twenty-five year veteran of the trade.

The presentation in Gubbins is really good. The music is chill, with some soft piano and trumpets making you feel like you’re relaxing in a cafe or something. And who knows? Maybe you are. Sound effects are serviceable and do what they need to. The look of the game is what really puts it over the top. It’s very cartoony, with lots of pop-up effects that punctuate the in-game action. The Gubbins themselves are all individually-designed creatures with their own little animations. When you play them, you’ll see short little flourishes, and some of them will just be hanging out on the edges of the board. The whole game feels alive with all these cute little animated elements, and I dig the creature design. That weird-looking fellow coming out at the end of each game has some impact, to be sure.

It’s hard to find much to object to in Gubbins, really. It doesn’t do anything dramatically different from other word games on a fundamental level, so if you don’t like that kind of thing I guess you won’t enjoy this? Otherwise, this is smooth sailing all the way. It has tons of charm thanks to its lively presentation, the extra twists give the gameplay a flavor of its own, and you can try it out for free, buy extra bits like more Gubbins a la carte, or pay one reasonable fee to get everything. I’ll happily take this game and all the gubbins and Gubbins that come with it.

Vampire Survivors-like Pizza Hero has been one of the more interesting takes on the genre on mobile. Since launch, it has also been updated a few times bringing in new content and features based on player feedback, and it has gotten a major update today bringing in endless mode, haptic feedback on iOS, some menu improvements, and more. If you’ve not gotten Pizza Hero yet, read Shaun’s review of it here. We also featured it as our Game of the Week when it launched. Barring the new mode and haptic feedback, the update fixes enemy collisions, changes leaderboards to keep track of local points instead of global, adds a description for pet icons, and has a best score added to world select per level. Watch the Pizza Hero trailer below:

If you’ve not gotten it, you can grab Pizza Hero for free on the App Store for iOS here. Head over to our dedicated and active forum thread for Pizza Hero here with the developer posting about changes and responding to impressions. I’m interested to see how Pizza Hero evolves over time as it gets closer to hitting 1.0. Today’s update is the first major one following the Halloween update that brought in new pets, the Cemetery world, and daily challenges. Have you played Pizza Hero on iOS yet and what do you think of the recent updates?

]]>
Short Circuit Studio is up-sizing their scope. No longer content to dwell in the realms of the Teeny Tiny, the developer has now moved up a full grade to merely Tiny. Tiny Connections (Free), that is. Its previous game, Teeny Tiny Town, was a lovely little update to a well-established older mobile game with a few wrinkles of its own. In a sense, that is also what Tiny Connections is, but it ventures further out conceptually from the games it was seemingly inspired by. And hey, it’s quite good too. I think these folks might be on to something here. What are all these connections about? Are we connecting people? Communities? Cables? Various thumb tacks on a map using red strings? I hope it isn’t the last one, but let’s have a look.

Okay, now that I’ve got you in here, I’ll get right to the point. You’re connecting water and electricity to little cities. You have a grid with different colored generators, and you need to use your limited supply of wires and pipes to connect them to all of the same-colored cities on your grid. The generators can take connections from all four cardinal directions, while cities can only be connected from one side. As time passes, more cities and generators will be added to the grid, introducing new colors and adding more complicated things to work around. Of course, you’ll also be given additional tools here and there that will hopefully help you deal with such complications. If you leave a city without its needed utilities for too long, that’s a game over. You’ll get your final score, and that’s that. Care to try again?

The base game of Tiny Connections comes with one country to play in, the United States. It includes a few different maps, and you’ll unlock those as you reach certain score thresholds. Each map varies in its land to water ratio among other things, so you need slightly different strategies for each. By purchasing a $1.99 IAP you’ll gain access to seven more maps spread across four additional countries. To round out the IAP situation here, the game has ads that you can remove with a $1.99 IAP, and there’s also a $2.99 IAP that will give you the new maps and remove ads in one go. I suspect more stages will arrive as new IAP in the future, but for now you can get everything the game has to offer for a few bucks. Or, if you want, you can just play for free on the three American maps and deal with the ads. Your call.

If you’ve been around the block a few times, the basic idea is probably sounding a little familiar here. Yes, this is rather similar to Mini Metro. Like that game, you’re having to manage what starts as a simple network of hubs, nodes, and the pieces that go between them. It gradually becomes more and more complicated, and eventually you’re just not going to be able to sort the spaghetti before the whole thing blows up in your face. Beyond the setting, the main difference here is that you’re dealing with multiple utilities, almost like if Mini Metro and Mini Motorways were smashed together. It’s a bit more strict in some ways and more lax in others. There are also some different special tools to make use of which fit the theme.

But hey, Teeny Tiny Town wasn’t the most original of affairs and I still loved it. I think what is different here is that Mini Metro isn’t quite as old as Triple Town is, and with deep apologies to Spry Fox, the presentation of Mini Metro isn’t as easily improved upon as Triple Town. Tiny Connections has a really slick presentation, and its focus on stylized realism is certainly distinct from the direction Dinosaur Polo Club chose for its games, but I really can’t say it looks and sounds better. Kind of a lateral move at best, depending on one’s tastes.

I suppose that’s the best way to describe Tiny Connections on the whole. It’s a lateral move at best from the games that it follows on from, and depending on how well you like the theme you may like it more or less. For my money, I don’t think there have been a whole ton of well-done games of this style yet, so I’m willing to give Short Circuit Studio a pass for opting to hew fairly closely to the basic idea and simply aiming to do its own take as well as it could. So that’s where I’ll leave that.

Beyond the lack of novelty, I only have some minor bones to pick with the game. The way the UI works makes it awfully easy to misplace pieces, but you can easily fix things up in those cases so it isn’t a huge deal. It’s not always immediately clear where a new problem has cropped up, particularly as things get crowded on the map. I feel like new cities occasionally pop up in places that can’t be addressed with what you have on hand, and that always feels very frustrating since all you can do is watch and wait until it busts. Relatively rare, but it does happen. Don’t waste your tunnels, friends.

I think that’s where I’ll park this one. Tiny Connections is an enjoyable, well-built spin on games like Mini Metro and Mini Motorways. Its less abstract art style and unusual premise might appeal to some players despite its mechanical familiarity, and I think it’s safe to say that if you loved any of the aforementioned titles then you’ll certainly want to give this a look as well. Since you can sample a good portion of the game for free, it’s easy to do just that. If you like what you see, you can open up the rest of the game and send those ads to Pluto for a very reasonable price. Another strong effort from this developer.

Earlier today, Reuters reported that ByteDance would be restructuring Nuverse in a retreat from the gaming business. Nuverse publishes Marvel Snap (Free), so many were curious what that restructure meant for the future of Marvel Snap. A few hours after the report, the official Marvel Snap Twitter account posted that the game would continue to operate and flourish in the future regardless of any changes at Nuverse. I actually asked Shaun what he thought of the Reuters report a bit before the official Marvel Snap posted its comment. View the full post on Twitter below:

Niantic and Capcom just announced the next major update for Monster Hunter Now (Free) on iOS and Android. When I wrote about Qualily’s quests returning, I speculated whether we would hear about Capcom’s December plans for Monster Hunter Now and maybe Zinogre. I’m curious if we start seeing things from Monster Hunter World Iceborne with this update, like potentially more monsters from that amazing expansion. Check out the key art from the update below:

Niantic and Capcom have just announced the return of Qualily’s quests in Monster Hunter Now (Free) on iOS and Android. If you missed the quests the first time, these special quests as a part of an event include rare upgrade and crafting materials being included through 10 time-limited quests. The rewards are Carpenterbugs, Monster Bone+, Dragonite Ore, and more earned from gathering points and slaying monsters. The event begins on December 1st at 5 PM local time and will go on until December 6th at midnight. To be eligible for this special event in your game, you need to be HR 11 and higher and you might need to slay Tobi-Kadachi to complete some quests which requires having done Chapter 4 of the main story. You can hunt in a group for these quests as well. During the last time the event was on, the Carpenterbugs and Monster Bone+ quests were super helpful.

Blizzard is teasing its biggest update yet for Diablo Immortal (Free) with the Splintered Souls Update due around the middle of next month. The game has been getting many updates since launch with 20 updates hitting this year, and next month’s update will follow the Blood Knight’s arrival. In addition to continuing the story, the update will bring in a new region, new bosses, PvP modes, new familiars, and more. Blizzard says more information will be available in the coming weeks, but you can watch a teaser for the update below:

Today, Diablo Immortal has been updated with the Harvest Bounty limited-time event now live. The update also sees the return of Trial of the Hordes, All Clans on Deck, Wild Brawl, and Hungering Moon events. The last bit of information from today’s patch notes is the Black Friday and Harvest Bundles being available in-game. If you’d like to play Diablo Immortal and don’t have it yet, you can grab it free on the App Store for iOS here, Google Play for Android here, and PC here. I’m curious to see this update, and also to see if Blizzard brings it to Steam like it did with Diablo 4. What do you think of Diablo Immortal if you play it regularly on mobile or PC?

Niantic and Capcom have just pushed out a new update for Monster Hunter Now (Free) on iOS and Android. This update arrives after a few of the recently-released November 2023 events have ended with one more starting soon. Out of the events, the Qualily quests gave me useful materials, but the events still feel lacking overall. Anyway, onto the update. The highlight features are sorting and filtering for weapons (arranging options by power, filtering by type, etc), the ability to use Favorites on the Overgrade screen, a swipe option to move between story and special quests, and fixes for Great Sword damage. So far, the Strong Wide Slash, True Charged Slash, and other effects needed work, and those have been addressed as detailed here.

With the update done, the Legiana event begins on November 17th. Details are here. If you are planning to start playing the game, I put together some tips and tricks for the game, details on the weapons, special skills, the current monsters list, my wishlist for future update monsters, and more. You can grab Monster Hunter Now on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The in app purchases include different sets of gems and upgrades. Check out the official website here. What do you think of Monster Hunter Now if you’ve been playing it so far on iOS and Android?

Following the recent iPhone 15 Pro and iPad port of Resident Evil Village, Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 4 Remake (Free) will launch on December 20th worldwide. Resident Evil 4 Remake debuted on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam earlier this year, and it recently had its expansion Resident Evil 4 Separate Ways arrive on the same platforms. Read my Steam Deck review of Resident Evil 4 Remake here. Resident Evil 4 Remake will launch on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later), and macOS (M1 and later) with cross progression as a universal purchase. It will be free to start with a single in app purchase to unlock the full base game. Capcom also confirmed today that the amazing Separate Ways will launch alongside the game on December 20th. You can watch Resident Evil 4 Remake gameplay from TGS 2023 at around 15:00 into the video below:

Pre-orders are now live here for Resident Evil 4 Remake on Apple platforms. The current price point for the game unlock and DLC have been revealed, but it is unclear if Capcom has a launch discount planned or not. Since these are in app purchases, Capcom might reveal a discount closer to or at launch. The full Resident Evil 4 Remake game unlock is currently priced at $59.99 with the extra DLC pack (to upgrade to Deluxe) costing $19.99. A price point for Separate Ways on Apple platforms hasn’t been announced, but it is likely $9.99 like the other platforms. The current date on the App Store page is a placeholder. After his video on Resident Evil Village (Free) for iPhone 15 Pro last week, MrMacRight on YouTube has put up another video for the port analyzing the iPad performance. The new Resident Evil Village technical analysis video went up over the weekend showcasing the M1 and M2 iPad performance and how much better it is compared to the iPhone 15 Pro version. Today, Resident Evil Village got an update to fix some crashes during gameplay, and I’ll be playing the opening hours again to see how I find it. I am yet to try it on on iPad at all, but the video from MrMacRight paints a pretty great picture for it. Watch his full technical analysis video for Resident Evil Village on iPad M1 and M2 below:

If you’d like to play Resident Evil Village and have a supported iPhone 15 Pro device or iPad with M1 chipset and better, you can now download it free here. It requires about 7.92GB downloaded once you get the initial download from the App Store done. It currently still has the launch discount for the base game unlock and the Winters’ Expansion. The regular pricing for the base game is a $39.99 unlock with a $19.99 in app purchase for the Winters’ Expansion DLC. There is also a $4.99 All Access Voucher DLC. The discount brings the base game unlock price down to $15.99, the Winters’ Expansion to $9.99, and the All Access Voucher to $1.99.

Check out the official website for Capcom’s upcoming Apple silicon ports here. Resident Evil 4 Remake from Capcom is due this year for iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later) models, and macOS after Resident Evil Village. Gameloft’s Disney-themed kart racer Disney Speedstorm () hit PC and console a while ago, and recently began pre-registrations for its global launch on mobile. I played the Disney Speedstorm Early Access launch version on both Switch and Steam Deck, and liked a lot of aspects, while hoping some would improve. Read my early access review of the game here. Today, the official Twitter account for Disney Speedstorm confirmed that the mobile soft launch version will support cross-save with the PC and console version. Once you link your accounts, you will need to select which progress and content to keep before progressing. I’m glad cross-save is making it in before the global mobile launch. Watch the trailer for the game below:

If you’ve not played the game on any platform yet, it is a free to play kart racer with Disney and Pixar characters and worlds. If you’d like to try out the soft launch, here’s the Disney Speedstorm soft launch App Store link. You can pre-register for it on Google Play for Android worldwide here and pre-order it on the App Store here (same link as the soft launch). On Steam and consoles, Disney Speedstorm is available now. The mobile version is free to play with various in app purchase sets of tokens. An official release date is yet to be revealed for the mobile version, but there is a placeholder date on the App Store. Have you played Disney Speedstorm on any platform before and will you be trying it on mobile when it does release?

Super Mario Run (Free) is celebrating the recent launch of the brilliant Super Mario Bros. Wonder Switch game with a free unlock campaign on iOS and Android. From now until November 30th at 10:59 PM PT, you will be able to play a paid stage for free even if you haven’t bought the full game unlock for Super Mario Run. This will not include every single paid stage though. Unlike the last time there was a cross collaboration, the one time unlock for Super Mario Run has not been discounted right now. If you link your Nintendo Account to the game, you will be able to play two paid stages for free during this event as detailed on the official announcement here.

If you haven’t played Super Mario Run in a while, now is a good time to get back to it to sample the paid content for free. The in app purchase full game unlock is the only purchase available for the game on iOS and Android. Grab the game for free here on the App Store for iOS and here on Google Play for Android. I still don’t care for Super Mario Run, but Super Mario Bros. Wonder is incredible and a brilliant return to form after New Super Mario Bros U. Have you been playing Super Mario Run recently and did you play Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

Niantic and Capcom have just revealed November 2023’s upcoming events, and while there are some expected and boring ones, the Qualily quests for important crafting materials is the first time I’d recommend actually doing these quests if you can. November 2023 follows the recently-ended Monster Hunter Now (Free) Halloween Pumpkin Hunt event that was not great. Beginning this Friday at 5 PM (local time), the Jyuratodus weekend begins with an increased appearance rate in the Swamp for all hunters HR 11 and higher. Monsters in all habitats will re-appear in shorter intervals as well.

Qualily’s Special Quests begin on November 10th at 5 PM until November 12th at 4 PM featuring time-limited quests for HR 11 and above hunters to earn Carpenterbugs, Monster Bone+, and Zenny. These are super important materials so I’d recommend doing the quests if you can. Then the Legiana weekend begins on November 17th (5 PM to 8 PM) until November 19th (1 PM to 4 PM) with November 18th having the event from 1 PM to 4 PM as well. The final event of November 2023 for Monster Hunter Now is the “Roar of the Desert: Diablos". This will see Black Diablos return all weekend with a Hunter Medal and more rewards. The event goes on from November 20th until November 26th. During this, both Diablos and Black Diablos will appear more frequently in Desert Habitats for all hunters at HR11 and higher with all monsters re-appearing in shorter intervals.

When Apple usually shows off a few games for its new iPhone models during phone events, they are either older mobile games or new bespoke ones. For the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, Apple surprised us with the reveal of Capcom’s upcoming ports of Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village (Free) in addition to Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding Director’s Cut and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage. The first of these four AAA ports to iOS and iPadOS is Resident Evil Village, out now. Both Jared and myself have been playing Resident Evil Village on iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro respectively for this review. I also have played a bit of it on my friend’s M1 iPad, but the focus of this review will be the iPhone 15 Pro version.

Resident Evil Village has been available since 2021 on consoles and PC platforms, and I’ve played it on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Steam Deck. I ended up liking the game more than Resident Evil 7, but found it was a lot better with the DLC and updates that arrived post-launch. Capcom has pushed out one major update already fixing a crash on specific devices, and I also wanted to try out the public build of the game more. I bought the in-game unlock and all DLC available to make sure it works fine.

On launching Resident Evil Village, you are prompted to download about 7.92GB, and then can view the options like DLC and the full game unlock if you don’t want to just sample the game for free. In terms of DLC, the Winters’ Expansion, full game unlock, and the Extra Content Shop All Access Voucher are available. These are similar to the main PC and console version DLC. Before getting into a new game, I’d recommend going into the options and customizing the touch controls. While I’m not too pleased with how Resident Evil Village controls purely on touch, Capcom has done a good job with the customization options for the on-screen controls as shown in the screenshot below.

Beyond controls, I was surprised to find a full graphics options menu in Resident Evil Village on iPhone 15 Pro. This is like the PC version where it shows you how much graphics memory is being used as you adjust various settings. This menu also lets you enable Apple’s MetalFX upscaling, change the screen resolution, frame rate target (with support for frame rates above 60fps), and the other options found in the PC version of Resident Evil Village. I didn’t pay much attention to the pre-release coverage for Resident Evil Village on iPhone 15 Pro and iPad M1, but I am impressed with how it looks and runs after some tweaking so far on iPhone 15 Pro. It does however run better on iPad M1 than iPhone 15 Pro.

The load times and visuals are great after tweaking, and it even loads quicker than the Xbox Series X version. When comparing Resident Evil Village on iPhone 15 Pro with the Steam Deck version, the latter is definitely comfier unless you have a controller like the Backbone One or something for your iPhone 15 Pro. Load times are a lot better on iPhone 15 Pro though. I hope a future update for Resident Evil Village on Apple silicon eventually gets full DualSense feature support for triggers and haptic feedback like the PS5 version, because I love how Capcom uses that in its PS5 releases. Right now, it only displays Xbox button prompts which is disappointing.

After spending more time with Resident Evil Village post-launch, I remain convinced that the best version of the game is with the DLC included. This is sold as the Gold Edition on consoles and PC, and on iOS requires the base game and the Winters’ Expansion. This expansion adds in the third person mode, Shadows of Rose expansion which is as good as when I first played it on PS5. It feels wild that this is all running natively on an iPhone, but here we are. I didn’t spend too much time with it on iPad, but I was impressed with it using an external Xbox controller.

I hope Capcom can work on improving the touch controls for the game in future updates. Developers like Feral Interactive have been bringing console games to mobile with optimized touch interfaces while also providing great controller support. While they are the gold standard, this is a good first step for Capcom with its AAA games on iPhone and iPad.

In its current state, I absolutely recommend getting Resident Evil Village on iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max if you have a controller like the Backbone One USB-C edition or use an external bluetooth controller and play on iPad. The touchscreen interface even with its customization options is not good. Capcom has done a fantastic job so far in bringing this AAA survival horror experience to Apple platforms, and I hope we see more RE Engine games make their way in the future after Resident Evil 4 Remake releases next month. Resident Evil Village is a free download with an in app purchase to unlock the full game, so I definitely recommend downloading it if you have a supported device to see how good the conversion is. Right now, it is a great start for Capcom on modern iOS devices, but I hope we see more optimized ports in the future.

Check out the official website for Capcom’s new Apple silicon ports here. Resident Evil Village releases on October 30th for iOS and iPadOS with pre-orders available here.

Resident Evil Village iPhone 15 Pro Review Score: 4/5

Update: Added review score after testing the game on iPhone 15 Pro after its first major update and also impressions from the M1 iPad Pro version.

The patch notes also had the announcement of a new game from Red Nexus Games. I’m interested in checking it out, and you can wishlist Fowl Damage on Steam here. In terms of changes for today’s iOS update, the Roundrel status effects affect Ballusion and Exploitball with the visual improvements going across button prompts for controllers, a proper loading screen, and other UI improvements. Niantic and Capcom have just revealed new details for the upcoming Monster Hunter Now (Free) Halloween Pumpkin Hunt event coming next week. This announcement follows yesterday’s version 63.0 update on mobile bringing a favorites system for equipment and party improvements. Beginning October 25th at 9 AM (local time), Monster Hunter Now Halloween Pumpkin Hunt event will begin with special quests to gather specific items or slaying specific monsters to earn Pumpkin Tickets. These can be used to upgrade Jack-o-Head equipment. From October 28th, a Halloween Medal Acquisition Quest will be available. The same day, Kulu-Ya-Ku holding a pumpkin-like rock will have an increased appearance rate. The event-exclusive gear includes the Jack-o-Head armor with the Solidarity skill and more. There

In addition to rewards and the gear, there will be two time-limited Packs available from the in-game shop and the web store featuring many useful items including Special Carving Knives. I hope this event is better than the Pink Rathian one because I barely managed finding five or six of those.

Back when Apple used to still bring boutique indie games and narrative-driven experiences to its service, the gorgeous South of the Circle () from State of Play who developed Kami ($2.99), Kami 2 ($2.99), INKS ($1.99), and Lumino City ($4.99) hit the service. Since then, South of the Circle launched on PC and console platforms. It eventually left Apple Arcade, but has finally returned to iOS as a free to start game with a one time unlock in app purchase for the full game. Out of all the games that leave the service, I hope most get ported elsewhere for preservation, but returning to iOS would be a bonus so I’m glad that this one returned. Watch the game’s official trailer below:

If you’ve not played it yet, South of the Circle is an adventure game with a narrative focus set in 1964 in Antarctica after an an aircraft crash. It tells the story of Peter who is a Cambridge academic trying to reach bases and fight for survival through the cold. If you’d like to try it on iOS now for free and without any subscription, grab it here on the App Store. Check out our forum thread for the original Apple Arcade release of South of the Circle here, the new App Store release forum thread here, and the official website for State of Play here. The one time unlock price is $3.99 right now on the App Store. Did you play South of the Circle before on Apple Arcade or will you be trying it out through this standalone iOS release?

Following the major update with changes to Jyuratodus and a lot more, Niantic and Capcom have just released the Monster Hunter Now (Free) version 63.0 update on mobile. The update has just gone live a few minutes ago on iOS with nearby party members’ avatars now appearing on the main screen, a favorites system for equipment, and more. This favorites system is similar to the main console and PC games’ wishlist option that lets you mark specific gear you want to forge or upgrade, and get highlights for the materials needed. If you’ve not played it yet, read my launch week review of it here. I’ve been playing it daily, and even managed slaying a few Pink Rathians during the event. Once you update, make sure to go and download all assets from the settings. The complete download was about 176MB here on iPhone.

The full patch notes should go up on the official support page, but they aren’t live there as of now. If you are planning to start playing the game, I put together some tips and tricks for the game, details on the weapons, special skills, the current monsters list, my wishlist for future update monsters, and more. Honkai Star Rail’s major 1.4 update “Jolted Awake From a Winter Dream" with new areas: Old Weapon Testing Ground and Pillars of Creation, the Aetherium Wars game, new playable characters, and more has launched on iOS, Android, and PC as of a few hours ago. Alongside the update launching, Honkai Star Rail has also launched globally on PS5 with cross progression. If you pre-loaded on PC or mobile, the download within the app client will not be much. On PS5, the Honkai Star Rail download size is about 34GB. If you do plan on playing on PS5, make sure you carefully go through the menus so you don’t inadvertently create a new HoYoverse account linked to PSN rather than having your main one linked. Since I already had this setup for Genshin Impact, it just picked that up and had me signed in when I booted up Honkai Star Rail. Watch the Honkai Star Rail PS5 launch trailer below:

Full patch notes for 1.4 are here. Logging into the game on PS5 will get you an added reward as detailed here. I’ll definitely be trying out Honkai Star Rail more on PS5 today. Have you been playing Honkai Star Rail regularly since it launched on mobile and PC and will you be trying it on PS5?

Capcom recently revealed the price point and release date for the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPad M1 versions of Resident Evil Village (Free) and also confirmed the price point for Resident Evil 4 remake. Details for the pricing, DLC, and pre-orders are here. In a new interview (Source: GamesIndustry.Biz via The GameDiscoverCo newsletter), Capcom Producer Tsuyoshi Kanda revealed that the studio could reach a point where it is able to target phones and tablets alongside current-generation consoles. The interview is worth reading for how Capcom worked with Apple before these ports, the M2 chips, and more.

In the same interview, Masachika Kawata, one of Resident Evil Village’smentioned that Capcom is not ready to commit to simultaneous releases of future games, because there are a lot of unknowns and the team will get feedback based on the current games scheduled to launch. They want to do better with each iteration. I don’t expect simultaneous releases, but I’m interested to see what Capcom brings next following these two releases. I doubt the team worked on supporting the RE Engine for Apple hardware just for two games. You can pre-order Resident Evil Village here for iPhone 15 Pro series and iPad (M1 and later). It is a free download with a one time unlock for the full game, and also extra DLC available like on PC and consoles. Niantic and Capcom have just released a new Monster Hunter Now (Free) update on both iOS and Android with some interesting changes, but no new features as of now. If you’ve not played it yet, read my launch week review of it here. Following this month’s events being revealed, Niantic has pushed out version 62.0 with certain monster attack hitboxes reduced, Jyuratodus behavior changes, AR fixes, and more. Jyuratodus’ behavior has been tweaked for when it emerges from underground to make its orientation consistent, and also sees an increase in the likelihood of parts breaking. Legiana, Great Girros, Rathalos, and Rathian see some attacks have their hitboxes reduced. Other changes include vibration tweaks so the phone doesn’t vibrate when moving at a high speed during restricted gameplay (Niantic needs to fix this annoying restriction).

The rest of the update based on the official support page, mentions friend code copy pasting errors being addressed, friend request sending fixes, BGM fixes on the main menu, and more. If you’ve not gotten it yet, I put together some tips and tricks for the game, details on the weapons, special skills, the current monsters list, my wishlist for future update monsters, and more. You can grab Monster Hunter Now on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The in app purchases include different sets of gems. Check out the official website here. Niantic and Capcom have just announced this month’s plans for the real world hunting action RPG Monster Hunter Now (Free) for iOS and Android. If you’ve not played it yet, read my launch week review of it here. October 2023 will see the Halloween Pumpkin Hunt, Tobi-Kadachi Weekend, Rathian and Pink Rathian Week, and more coming. The Halloween Pumpkin Hunt includes a Halloween-themed field map, Halloween-themed equipment, and changes to how Kulu-Ya-Ku looks. More details will be revealed soon. Full details on the event times and dates are here, but the October 9 (12:00 a.m.) until October 13 (4:59 p.m.) week for the Pink Rathian increased appearances are a highlight. This is available to those who finished Chapter 9 and unlocked Rathian hunts. The Pink Rathian is a Rathian subspecies with pink scales if you’ve not played the console and PC games yet.

Having played more of the game daily since launch, I really hope Niantic fixes the annoying “gameplay restricted" alert when you’re in a car or walking fast. Even if you’re in a cab or bus, the gameplay gets restricted, and takes too long to get back to letting you play. Hopefully we also see some performance improvements and native iPad support. I’ve been playing the iPhone version on iPad recently, and it works fine, but a native version would be better. I put together some tips and tricks for the game, details on the weapons, special skills, the current monsters list, my wishlist for future update monsters, and more as well. If you’ve not played it yet, you can grab Monster Hunter Now on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The in app purchases include different sets of gems. Check out the official website here. What do you think of Monster Hunter Now if you’ve been playing it so far on iOS and Android?

Back when Fallout Shelter (Free) released on mobile, and eventually hit consoles and PC, I didn’t think it would lead to something similar for The Elder Scrolls, but here we are. The Elder Scrolls: Castles is a new simulation game from Bethesda Game Studios that has just hit Android early access as revealed on its Google Play page. This game is yet to be officially announced, but could be the title Todd Howard was talking about back in November (Via IGN and Lex Fridman’s podcast). The Elder Scrolls: Castles has you controlling your castle and dynasty, oversee your subjects, grow, get more rulers, and more. The gameplay screenshot on the Google Play page below does remind me of Fallout Shelter. This game is unrelated to The Elder Scrolls Blades it seems.

As of this writing, an official announcement or iOS version are yet to be revealed. Maybe it will also come to iOS when it is ready for its full launch, or release sooner as a soft launch. Until then, you can try out Bethesda Game Studios’ newest release with The Elder Scrolls: Castles on Android right now. Check it out on Google Play here. The Elder Scrolls: Castles is in development for mobile, but I assume it will also come to PC and consoles eventually. Hopefully we get an official announcement for it in the near future. If you’ve been interested in Bethesda Game Studio’s PC and Xbox game Starfield, read my review in progress here. Did you play Fallout Shelter and will you be trying out The Elder Scrolls: Castles on Android today?

Monster Hunter Now (Free) for iOS and Android released earlier this month from Niantic and Capcom and I’ve been playing it daily and enjoying it quite a bit. Read my launch week review here. If you’ve already played something from Niantic involving augmented reality, there’s a lot you might find familiar in Monster Hunter Now. Whether you’ve played a ton of Monster Hunter like I have, or are completely new to the franchise with your first taste being Monster Hunter Now, I’ve put together a set of tips and tricks to help you during the early hours of the game. This guide will help you with the basics and also with some things to keep in mind to ensure you’re always making the most of your time and resources while playing Monster Hunter Now.

Practice the basics of combat against smaller monsters in Monster Hunter Now

You start out with the Sword & Shield weapon type in Monster Hunter Now, with the opening hunts quite simple. Use this time to learn your weapon and also hunt smaller monsters that usually die in a hit or two. These monsters are great fodder to practice the basic controls and attacks.

If you aren’t enjoying a certain weapon, swap it out for something else in Monster Hunter Now

I’m not a fan of the Sword & Shield, and main the Great Sword in Monster Hunter games. I was just tolerating the combat until unlocking the Great Sword after a bit of playing, after which my fun grew exponentially in Monster Hunter Now. If you aren’t a fan of either of those, you unlock four more weapon types soon after. Forge the basic version of each of them if you aren’t sure and play around before settling on one. Monster Hunter is always about crafting better weapons and gear, so don’t fret if you aren’t happy with your build.

Gather as much as you can in Monster Hunter Now

Barring monster parts, you also need materials like bones, stone, or ore to craft. These appear at gathering spots or the smaller ones that appear within your access range (indicated by the circle around you). Keep tapping these when possible to gather resources.

Mix and match armor pieces in Monster Hunter Now

Just like in the main Monster Hunter games, don’t worry too much about your armor set initially. Just focus on crafting new sets for the early hours. You can look at armor skills and more later on. The early hours are about getting your bearings and just surviving against the monster onslaught.

Know when to use your special skill in Monster Hunter Now

After a bit of playing, you can unlock your weapon’s special skill from Grade 2 of its upgrade. This is a powerful attack that gives you some invincibility frames and unleashes a powerful attack on a monster. Save this for when you aren’t able to dodge correctly or are focusing on a specific monster part.

Use the lock on skill in Monster Hunter Now as soon as you unlock it

From the early hours, you can craft the Kulu Headpiece 3 which gives you the lock on skill. This lets you tap the aiming icon during a hunt to target specific parts of the monster’s body. Tap the part you want to target and you will automatically focus your attacks on said part when you are close to the monster. This is useful if you’re working to upgrade your weapon and need a specific monster’s tail or any other monster drop that requires breaking a specific part of its body.

Try out different weapons in Monster Hunter Now, but…

Like I said above, if you aren’t enjoying a weapon, swap it out and try the others, but don’t upgrade weapons before trying them out through the basic version. Some resources and monster drops are hard to come by in Monster Hunter Now, and you shouldn’t waste them while forging something you might not even use for more than a few hunts.

Do both story and special quests in Monster Hunter Now

While you default to story quests, there are also special quests in Monster Hunter Now that reset daily giving you added money, Hunter Rank points, and more. Either way, pay attention to the requirements of both kinds of quests because they are active at the same time. You can finish multiple quests in one go as well depending on the requirements. Focus on completing the story quests to unlock an Urgent Quest that has a stronger monster, but will give you better rewards. Once you hit an Urgent Quest, you will not be able to progress the story until you complete said quest. Special Quests reset at around midnight each day.

Save your paintballs for more-difficult monsters in Monster Hunter Now

Paintballs in Monster Hunter Now are available in two forms: Pink paintballs and Blue paintballs. Blue paintballs are for your palico (helper) that can mark monsters when Adventure Sync is enabled while your phone is in your pocket or basically the app isn’t open. Pink paintballs are for you to manually use to mark monsters you can’t fight right now for whatever reason. A marked monster will remain available to summon for up to 2 days. You get blue paintballs daily, but pink paintballs are only given to you for reaching specific in-game milestones or through purchases in the shop.

Monster Hunter Now Adventure Sync explained

Monster Hunter Now Adventure Sync lets the app track your location while the app isn’t active. This is used to let your Palico gather or mark monsters. I disabled this to save battery life, but you can use it if you want.

Make sure to login daily for first-aid meds in Monster Hunter Now

You are given first-aid med daily, but need to claim it manually from the in-game store. Remember to do this because you always need more heals during hunts and the first-aid meds are free heals given daily.

Share your referral code for free in-game items in Monster Hunter Now

You can also share your referral code to get someone else to sign up earning rewards. This is a great way to get free in-game items.

Take your time while playing Monster Hunter Now

Monster Hunter Now is a new game that likely will evolve over time with new content, features, and more. If you feel like you’ve exhausted everything it has to offer, take a break. Also don’t worry about finishing chapters quickly to unlock new content. The game isn’t designed for binge sessions at home (like I do with the main Monster Hunter games).

Check your phone graphics and frame rate options in Monster Hunter Now

On both my iOS and iPadOS devices, Monster Hunter Now defaulted to 30fps. You can enable 60fps while hunting through a toggle in the in-game settings. You can also adjust the graphics quality from “low" to “very high" presets here. A battery saver option is also available here.

Remember to zoom out and use the camera in Monster Hunter Now

By default, your field of view in hunts is quite narrow with how close the camera is to you. You can pinch to zoom out and swipe around to turn where you are facing. Do this often as the mid to late game monsters will fly around or move quite quickly. You don’t want your precious time in a hunt to go looking for a monster or moving the camera to aim because the monster moved out of your view do you?

Link a third party account to save progress across devices in Monster Hunter Now

If you, like me, signed up with an Apple ID instead of Google account, you currently will be able to sync progress to another iOS or iPadOS device, but will not be able to claim promotional items / codes. You need to sync a google account to do that for some reason. Either way, make sure you have an account linked here so you don’t lose your progress.

Save time while playing by downloading all assets in Monster Hunter Now settings

If you’re sick of seeing a few MB downloaded each time you do anything in-game, go into the game settings and scroll all the way down to the support section. You can download all assets here which usually is a few hundred MB at most. This will save you time during hunts and while moving around in-game or completing the story.

This Monster Hunter Now tips and tricks guide will be updated over time once anything changes from Niantic’s end.

If you’ve not gotten it yet, you can grab Monster Hunter Now on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The in app purchases include different sets of gems. Check out the official website here. Hopefully this Monster Hunter Now tips and tricks guide for beginners and veteran Monster Hunter players helped you out with the basics of the game and more. If you have your own tips to share, let us know in the comments below.

Update: Added new information from the major December 2023 Fulminations in the Frost update.

Monster Hunter Now (Free) for iOS and Android released earlier this month from Niantic and Capcom and I’ve been playing it daily and enjoying it quite a bit. Read my launch week review here. Whether you’ve played a ton of Monster Hunter like I have, or are completely new to the franchise with your first taste being Monster Hunter Now, this guide will help you with special skills for each weapon type in the game, how to unlock special skills, when to use them, and more. Since Monster Hunter Now is still new, there are more weapons planned to come in updates, and more weapon types means more skills. I will be updating this guide over time when we get more skills added in-game.

What is a Special Skill in Monster Hunter Now?

Each weapon type in Monster Hunter Now has a special skill that gives you some invincibility frames and unleashes a devastating attack on the monster. These vary by weapon type. Special skills are available after a bit of playing.

When to use special skills in Monster Hunter Now?

Since you get some invincibility frames, you can use special skills to avoid a powerful attack from the monsters assuming you can’t dodge in time, and you can also use it as a finisher or to break a specific part depending on your weapon type. As a Great Sword main, I’ve been using the True Charged Slash to cut tails or break heads of monsters.

How to unlock Monster Hunter Now special skills for each weapon?

Once you become a full-fledged hunter (Hunter Rank 11 or higher), you will be able to overgrade weapons to Grade 2. Grade 2 is when you unlock the weapon’s special skill.

How to use Monster Hunter Now special skills?

Once you’ve unlocked a special skill for your weapon and have equipped said weapon, attacking monsters (even small ones) slowly fills up the special skill gauge icon above your health bar. Once this is full, you can unleash your special skill on the monster. Once filled, it can remain charged so you can save it for a large monster rather than wasting it on the small ones. While fighting a large monster, use special skills whenever you can because the gauge keeps filling up as you attack more.

What Monster Hunter Now special skills are available right now?

The following Monster Hunter Now special skills are available in-game right now as of the December 2023 update:

  • Sword & Shield – Perfect Rush Combo – Lunge into the enemy with a dizzying flurry of strikes and bashes.
  • Great Sword – True Charged Slash – Gathers all of the body’s strength into a devastating slash attack.
  • Long Sword – Spirit Helm Breaker – Leap skywards and plunge into foes with this deadly secret technique.
  • Hammer – Spinning Bludgeon – Utilizes the rotational force of the hammer to deliver a shattering blow.
  • Light Bowgun – Wyvernblast Counter – A single shot unleashing the full destructive might of Wyvernblast ammo.
  • Bow – Dragon Piercer – Uses all of the body’s might to release an arrow that can pierce through anything.
  • Lance – Dash Attack—a lethal, full-throttle thrust that penetrates through all defenses.
  • Dual Blades – Heavenly Blade Dance (SP)—a series of fatal attacks that soar high into the sky, slicing through monsters.

New Monster Hunter Now special skills will be added through updates.

The official Monster Hunter Now weapons site confirms more weapons will be added. Each weapon will have its own special skill.

If you’ve not gotten it yet, you can grab Monster Hunter Now on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The in app purchases include different sets of gems. Check out the official website here. Hopefully this Monster Hunter Now special skills guide helped you out with the basics of unlocking special skills, when to use them, and all the ones in-game right now. What do you think of the special skills implemented in-game right now?

Update: Added new information from the major December 2023 Fulminations in the Frost update.

Monster Hunter Now (Free) for iOS and Android released earlier this month from Niantic and Capcom and I’ve been playing it daily and enjoying it quite a bit. Read my launch week review here. If you, like me, played a ton of Monster Hunter on PC and consoles over the last many years, you’re curious about what monsters are included in Monster Hunter Now. If you’re new to the series and beginning with Monster Hunter Now, you will find a lot to love in Capcom’s best franchise. This guide will cover all the monsters included in Monster Hunter Now, and also a wishlist of ones I’d love to see arrive soon in updates. Monster Hunter Now feels like it is building off Monster Hunter World’s monsters given the initial set, but I hope we see more from Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate.

Monster Hunter Now monsters list

The following monsters were in the base game:

  • Great Jagras
  • Kulu-Ya-Ku
  • Pukei-Pukei
  • Barroth
  • Great Girros
  • Tobi-Kadachi
  • Jyuratodus
  • Paolumu
  • Anjanath
  • Rathian
  • Legiana
  • Rathalos
  • Diablos

The following monsters are in the base game special event quests:

  • Black Diablos
  • Pink Rathian

The following monsters have been added in the December 2023 Fulminations in the Frost update:

  • Zinogre
  • Banbaro
  • Barioth
  • Radobaan

How to unlock new monsters in Monster Hunter Now

As you progress through quests and the story chapters, you will encounter more difficult and varied monsters in Monster Hunter Now. Some might also be only in events (just like in the main games).

Will more Monsters be added to Monster Hunter Now?

The official website confirms that more Monsters are coming to Monster Hunter Now

Monster Hunter Now monsters wishlist

It is worth noting that some of these might not be feasible given the structure of Monster Hunter Now, but let me dream.

  • Rajang – Rajang is my favorite monster in the series and one that causes a lot of stress for many players. I hope Rajang (and Furious Rajang) join in here.
  • Zinogre – Zinogre is a fan favorite, and would be a great addition to this game with its design, attacks, armor, and music. (Available as of December 2023)
  • Gore Magala – Gore’s unique mechanics, fun attacks, great music, and more would be amazing here.
  • Nergigante – Monster Hunter World’s flagship is a monster I never tire of slaying after multiple hundreds of hunts.
  • Malzeno – Malzeno is Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak’s flagship, and is one of Capcom’s most elegantly designed monsters. A perfect addition for any game.
  • monster hunter rise sunbreak gore magala

  • Velkhana – Monster Hunter World: Iceborne’s flagship arrived in Sunbreak, but should also be in Now to bring the chills and another excellent Capcom design to the game.
  • Astalos – Astalos’ music, armor designs, weapons, look, and attacks make it one of my favorites in the series.
  • Deviljho – Deviljho aka pickles, would be a great addition if we get the invasion mechanic in Monster Hunter Now.
  • Magnamalo – Monster Hunter Rise’s flagship happens to be one of Capcom’s best monsters ever, but I don’t know how the smaller arena would work for Magnamalo’s attacks.
  • Valstrax – Valstrax from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is likely not feasible given the smaller arena structure here, but let a man dream.

One thing you might’ve noticed is the music. I hope these monsters also arrive with their themes or new arrangements for Monster Hunter Now. Music is a huge part of the Monster Hunter experience and what we’ve heard in Monster Hunter Now so far is great.

If you’ve not gotten it yet, you can grab Monster Hunter Now on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The in app purchases include different sets of gems. Check out the official website here. Which monsters would you like to see in Monster Hunter Now?

Earlier this week, the brilliant Roto Force (Free) got updated on Steam to bring in a new game mode, difficulty curve changes, and more. If you’ve not played it yet, read my glowing review of Roto Force here. Today, Roto Force on iOS and Android has been updated with the same big PC update to bring in boss rush mode, a harder boss rush mode, a free aim modifier, gameplay difficulty adjustments, and more. This update’s balance adjustments see many late game bosses being made easier on the default difficulty to be less of a difficulty spike. Roto Force was amazing even with out this, so it is better now. Watch Roto Force in action through the trailer below.

To unlock boss rush mode, you need to beat Roto Force. If you beat boss rush mode on hard mode, you unlock a harder version of the mode. Barring this update, Roto Force has gotten patched to fix various issues and to improve controller support following launch. It is a free to start game with a single full game unlock IAP. If you’ve not gotten it yet, you need to play it. Check it out on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. If you’d rather play it on PC, Roto Force is available on Steam here alongside a free demo. What do you think of Roto Force if you’ve played it, and will you be trying out the boss rush mode?

Skullgirls Mobile version 6.0 update also brings in the Hilgard’s Castle stage, collection improvements, and more. Full patch notes and a release FAQ are available on the official forums here and here, but the forum pages are currently down. Watch the newest Skullgirls Mobile Marie gameplay showcase video below:

Maintenance is currently going on (for about 5 or 6 hours more as of this writing) for Marie’s arrivial in Skullgirls Mobile 6.0 which just started rolling out worldwide. You can still download and update the game, but will not be able to play until maintenance is over. Six monthly fighters are also planned for the rest of this year as mentioned here. You can grab Skullgirls Mobile on iOS and Android right now. Skullgirls 2nd Encore is available on PC and all consoles including Xbox through its most recent release. I included Skullgirls 2nd Encore in my feature on the best fighting games to play on Steam Deck, and while I play that version the most, I’ve been dipping in and out of the Xbox and Switch versions as well. Will you be trying out Marie in Skullgirls Mobile later today when maintenance ends for the game and what do you think of the update?

Back in June, Annapurna Interactive announced that Daniel Benmergui’s Storyteller (Free) would be hitting mobile through Netflix Games this month. If you’ve not played it on Switch or Steam yet, Storyteller is a puzzle game about putting together stories with tools like characters, settings, titles, and more. It features stories covering love, crime, and betrayal. I enjoyed my time with it on Steam Deck and Switch quite a bit. Read my review of it here. Storyteller on mobile platforms is now available through Netflix Games, and a big update has gone live on PC and Switch with new features included in the mobile release. Watch the Storyteller Netflix Games launch trailer below:

In terms of new additions for those who already own or played it, this update on Steam and Switch brings in a new character, a new chapter bringing in the older demo levels into the game as a new chapter, more than 20 new levels in existing chapters, fully-voiced narration, and more. I’ll be covering the Netflix version to see how much it has changed and how it feels on iPad and iPhone in the near future. If you’d like to try it on mobile and have an active Netflix subscription, Storyteller is on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. It is also out now on Switch and Steam with today’s update. Check it out here on the eShop for Nintendo Switch and here on Steam. Have you played Storyteller before on PC and console or will you be checking it out on Netflix for mobile today?

Back in June 2017, SEGA announced its SEGA Forever initiative to bring its classic games to iOS and Android as free to start games with a no ads IAP. Each game was to be adapted for mobile while remaining faithful to the originals. We saw the service launch with five games with more coming every few weeks. As recently as this week, select SEGA Forever games have been delisted on iOS and Android. Shaun has most of them installed and spotted some of them getting updates recently with new notifications in-game alerting users that the support for the specific game has ended, with a link to find more info on other platforms to play it on. Currently, that link opens SEGA’s home page. Check out the warning screenshot from Shaun below:

SEGA Forever games launched with cloud saves, controller support, and more. Shaun’s covered many of them over the years, but it seems like the program is currently on hold or over. SEGA is yet to announce anything, but if we do get any official news around it, we will post about it. If you missed the original launch, watch the unlisted trailer for it below:

As of now, it is unclear when many of these were delisted, but some were done as recently as this week. The delisted games are: Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Phantasy Star Classics, Revenge of Shinobi, Vectorman, Decap Attack, Eswat, Ristar, Space Harrier 2, Beyond Oasis, Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, and After Burner Climax. There are still some games available to play and buy if you didn’t own them before, but the ones above have been delisted. It is unclear if they will return. Check out the official SEGA Forever website here. Did you play any of the delisted games before and what would you like to see SEGA bring to the his program if they are continuing it?

Reverse: 1999 (Free) from developer Bluepoch was just announced for an October worldwide release on iOS, Android, and PC platforms. While there are loads of free to play games announced daily, the aesthetic, trailer, and music in Reverse: 1999 has been interesting enough that I was hoping to see it get a global release when I was first linked to the game’s announcement before. Reverse: 1999 is a time-travel RPG with full cross play. Reverse: 1999 has full English voice acting across its cinematic story focusing around the year 1999 as the name suggests. Watch the new Reverse: 1999 global release date trailer below:

Over the weekend, Capcom revealed the Japanese price points for both upcoming iOS and iPadOS ports of Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake (Free), in addition to confirming the release date for Resident Evil Village. Since then, pre-orders have gone live for Resident Evil 4 Remake confirming the DLC arriving alongside the game, and also the download size and other details for the upcoming Apple port of the horror masterpiece. You can watch Resident Evil 4 Remake gameplay from TGS 2023 at around 15:00 into the video below:

The video presentation above confirms that the free Mercenaries DLC and Separate Ways are in the works for Apple platforms. Resident Evil 4 Remake requires iOS 17 and later with A17 Pro chip or later on iPhone (just iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max right now), iPadOS 17 with an M1 chip or later on the iPad, and macOS 13.0 with an M1 chip or later on the Mac side. On Mac, the download size is 19.3GB on the App Store, but the iOS download size is around 700MB. If these numbers are not placeholder, the iOS version will likely have the full game download after you buy the in app purchase.

Speaking of in app purchases, since pre-orders are now live here, the price point for the game unlock and DLC have been revealed. The full Resident Evil 4 Remake game unlock is $59.99 with the extra DLC pack (to upgrade to Deluxe) costing $19.99. Don’t let the weapon upgrade tickets fool you into thinking this is new because those DLC sets are also on PC and consoles. A price point for Separate Ways is likely $9.99, though the in app purchase is not listed on the App Store right now. The current date on the store page is a placeholder. Pre-orders for the iOS and iPadOS version of Resident Evil Village are not live as of this writing. Will you be trying out Resident Evil 4 Remake on Apple devices later this year?

During its TGS 2023 stream, Capcom showcased the Following upcoming ports revealed during the Apple iPhone 15 event. Capcom also announced pricing for the mobile (and macOS in the case of the former) ports of Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village (Free) during the stream. While the games will be free to start, they will have a one time in app purchase to unlock the full game. The pricing for Japan revealed in the stream below matches the game’s price on Steam in both cases. (Update) The official pricing for the release is now available thanks to App Store pre-orders going live. The base game for Resident Evil Village will be a $39.99 unlock with a $19.99 in app purchase for DLC pack. There’s also a $4.99 All Access Voucher purchase listed. The pages for those DLC packs on Steam reveal more details here and here. Watch footage from the games being played on iPad and more below:

It is worth noting that the DLC for both Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village will be a separate purchase going by the stream. I assume the newly-released Separate Ways for Resident Evil 4 Remake will be $9.99 while the Winters’ Expansion will be $19.99 for Resident Evil Village. Capcom’s stream above also mentioned that you can customize the buttons and placement of touch controls as you like. While I will likely use a Backbone One or Kishi to play these on iPhone, I always test out touch controls in a mobile port so I’m interested to see how it ends up working. Check out a screengrab from the stream showing customized sizes for touch controls below:

If you’ve not followed both of these releases after the Apple event, Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village were originally confirmed for iPhone 15 Pro, but Capcom also confirmed that Resident Evil 4 Remake will come to macOS and iPadOS devices with an M1 or better. Resident Evil Village is already available on macOS, so the iOS and iPadOS release will be a single purchase when it arrives this year with support for M1 iPads and better.

Check out the official website for these ports here. Resident Evil 4 Remake is due this year for iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later) models, and macOS. Resident Evil Village releases on October 30th for iOS and iPadOS with pre-orders available here. On the App Store, both games will be a free download with a one time in app purchase to access the full game. The games will support on screen controls, game controllers, multi-touch, HDR, and more when they launch on Apple devices. Resident Evil 4 Remake will have cross progression on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS while Resident Evil Village will have cross progression on iPadOS and iOS only. What do you think of the ports based on the new gameplay and pricing?

Update: Added Resident Evil Village iOS and iPadOS pre-order link for the App Store.
